How to create a watertight SEO strategy

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

In recent times, the benefit of online marketing has become ever more apparent. As live shows have had to move on to streaming, more local businesses have needed to offer online options and so forth due to the pandemic, the need to get as high up the search engine rankings as possible has never been more important. Here are a few tips on how you can create a watertight SEO strategy for 2024.

The right keywords

What are the right keywords for your business? A quick search will often show you what the highest ranked pages on particular searches. What to be aware of is the kind you use- “short tail” (single word phrases) such as “bakery” will tend to be more competitive whereas a longer “long tail” keyword like “gluten-free bread Diss” will have fewer people trying to get higher on those rankings.

Therefore, long-tail keywords are often more likely to have higher rates of conversion, due to the fact that people are specifically looking for those things as opposed to a more general search.

Stand out

A lot of people will have content that will say “X number of tips to make your writing better”. However, if you use a more unusual phrase such as “The lazy person’s guide to better creative writing” it is more likely to stand out due to the fact fewer people will use that particular phrasing.

Be better

This one is easier said than done, but the quality of your content is just as important as the keywords you use. Adding a video, professionally commissioned illustrations and writing that is coherent and accessible will stay longer than something that is written up on a template that focuses on SEO rather than the focus those words should be.

The visuals are important because while you want people coming to see your content, if they have trouble reading it or it looks unprofessional then they are unlikely to engage and read the whole article, watch the full video and so forth.

What will get people talking?

Another key part of getting your site up the search rankings is backlinks. A Backlink is when one website, links to another. Backlinks are like fuel for SEO, Google, and other search engines will look at the websites that have a link to your website. Using those website’s credibility and SEO, search engines will be able to find out if you are a credible website. For example, if you get a backlink from a large media source, that has an established userbase, it is highly likely that your website is a trusted and credible source. How you achieve backlinks will depend on what is in your content. Data that stands out, some interesting trivia, an unearthed story that people didn’t know before, all of this could be something that people discover and want to share.

It is also fair to say that if your work is good enough, this will be what encourages people to share it. For example, a video that demonstrates how your product works and delivered in a fun, engaging way would increase the chances of people remembering it and giving it a try. In turn, they may want to recommend friends and so will look up the video so that they can say “This is the thing I was telling you about”.

Again, this is where SEO strategy comes in as you want this to be as easy for them to find as possible.

Short URLs

In terms of SEO, short URLs tend to fare better than longer ones. Ideally, these should also be related to your keywords to make them easier to find.
